Day’s fly by…. October 18, 2007

I think the biggest thing I dreaded going into teaching was that the day’s would drag on, sucking, and sucking, and sucking more as I sucked my way through being a sucky teacher.  Eloquent, I know, but also a true story.  This was what I feared.

Little did I know that in the little paradox that is my classroom, although my students perceive time as dragging, it is actually passing in a whirlwind of crazy. A whirlwind, folks, one that I hope will put me down somewhere cool, like Oz.  Days just seem to fly by and I get to seventh period and I can’t remember how I got there.  Part of it has to be teaching the same subject four times in a row, making it all seem to smush together in my mind, but the rest is likely the blur that is my attempting to be prepared every day.

I can’t seem to work at home, I just slack off, so I stay and do most of my work at school, which makes for a long day, especially with the Speech and Debate starting, but I am finally getting used to the schedule.  What I worry about is not the ten hour day, but rather the fact I have all these ideas I want to use in the classroom, but its going by so quickly it seems that I am just treading water to keep my head above the waves rather than riding them gracefully with all the cool lesson plans I was taught in college. Like this unit we are in now, Renaissance and Reformation.  I want to do an art comparison unit, with graphic organizers, and use the smartboard to put up art they can interact with to identify characteristics and things, and instead I am scrambling to get my grading done.  By the time the grading is in, the unit will be more than half of the way over.

Its a conundrum. I keep thinking of all the cool things I will be able to do next year, but I dont want to have to wait till next year.  And so early in I go, to attempt some sort of art lesson plan :).
